Ok, this is just for fun, I have 4 dogs and if I say one of their names only that dog looks at me or comes to me, how do the other dogs know thats not their name?

i think it's mostly repitition and referint to a certain dog by a certain name. kind of like babies.. how do babies learn their name??.. by hearing it over and over. then once they do associate a name with themselves then they respond to it [both pets and kids!!]

I am not sure how it works. All three of our dogs know their names. Of course, if I am in the kitchen and I call one of the dogs, all three come running. They think they might miss a treat or something.

What a good question! I have 15 dogs and the same with us!!!!!! They know their names!!! Even the ones who joined the family already being seniors (there is no way to know if they even had a name before entering the shelter) know their names! They know each other's names also... when I say one of their names, the others look at him/her! They are INTELLIGENT creatures!!!!

I just think they learn that their name represents them. My dogs and my cat know which one is being called. It's just like how people know their names represent them: reinforced by affection/treats/whatever until the animal or person understands the name means them.

all of our dogs know their names! As do the majority of our sheep. And each and every cow and bull knows his/her name!

What I heard and what I think really works is the dogs here the last part of their name.. The last sound..

They're just smart! ;) All three of mine each know their own name.

I think they can recognize different sounds...at one point I had 3 dogs, now I have 2 & each dog responds to their own name without the others thinking that they're being called.

Mine know it because if they both come running over, I only pay attention to the one I called. Luckily I got mine at different times, so Zoe already knew her name when the new puppy came.

From what I understand, the trainer say's it is like a cue word you use for training. When they hear you say at first they do not unerstand but once you get them to come to you after saying it they catch on. Just like when your dog potty's and you say potty the associate the word with action. What smart little creatures!!
