Q: I can't find a dog toy that lasts!

I have been having a problem finding a dog chew toy that my 6 month old shepherd mix won't destroy in minutes. I have rubber KONG bones that he can't rip apart, but he is only interested in those if they have peanut butter in them, which i don't want to give him too often. I try and save that for when I am leaving the house and he has to go in his crate. He also has some durable variety of Nylabones that last, but he very quickly loses interest in them and will only chew for a short while (I think they loose flavor.) He prefers softer bones and plush squeaky toys, but rips them apart immediately. I tried one of those Firehose material toys that are supposed to be rated for aggressive chewers. For awhile he played with it and threw it around, but once he started chewing he was getting through the end of it in minutes. I took it away and would only give it to him occasionally, but in days he was pulling the stuffing and squeaker out so i had to throw it away. I know that rawhide is not recommended, so i haven't tried that. I need to find a bone he can chew on and not eat immediately. I have been spending so much money on dog toys that don't last and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of something i could try.

to this day I have not found a toy that can stand up to my boys. My shepherd especially. So if you find one please let me know. lol. We keep trying all the toys we can find for hard chewers to no avail. Anyway, good luck lol..... I wish I could have been more of a help but i figured i would let you know you aren't alone. especially when it comes to shepherds.

I have the same problem with my pit bulls. Nothing lasts, though nylabones do hold up the longest. I find that they get bored with the same toy after a short period, so I take them up after a while, and give them back to them a day later. Then it is like a new toy. You can try putting them in a ziploc bag with some of their dry food so that the toys smell like their food when you take it out later. They like knotted rope toys too, but without supervision those don't last either. Good luck.

I have the same problem with my dog! She loves to chew but destoryes her toys or loses interest in them quickly. We have a few kongs and we pack them with her dog food. We take her dry food and add just a little water so the dry food moistens just a little. Then we add a small amount of either canned food or peanut butter and mix it. Then we pack the kongs and freeze them. Our dog LOVES these and they last for a good chunk of time. It also helps her work for some of her food and drains alittle bit of her energy.

We also buy beef marrow bones and keep them in the freezer. We will thaw one in the fridge and give her that. She loves them and we get them just a little longer than a large kong and it takes her a while to get all the marrow out. We put it back in the fridge when she is done with it. We will leave it in the fridge until all the marrow is gone.
