Q: How to get rid of ants in pet food/water?

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for keeping ants out of Magic and Angel's food and water? I use the Drinkwell Orignal Pet Fountain and Petmate's LBistro portion control feeder. I also daily give them each apr. 2 1/2 ounces moist food in cermacic dishes. As of yesterday I have noticed so far the ants are only invading their moist food. But since I have a problem with ants here and have ant traps through out hte house I am worried it won't be long and they will go after the dry food and water. Any help would be much appreciated.

I put the food in a small bowl and then put the bowl on a plate. Then I pour water on the plate. Just enough so the ants have to swim to get to the food and they stay away.

Ants follow a scent trail that is put down by their scout. It is a chemical scent that the other ants follow to the food source. You need to find another substance that will break the chemical trail. You can try baking soda, peroxide, vinegar, or hot soapy water. - not all together of course! : )

Find the ant trail and scrub about 1 -2 foot length really well. Then rinse it and let it air dry.

Also, get an elevated feeder if you can.

Good luck!

we have the same problem, so we use those little disks ant traps. maybe if you put one of your traps closer to the feeding station it would entice them to go there instead?
if you're leaving wet food out longer than twenty minutes {which is all a cat needs to find their meal and eat it}, try pulling the dishes until they're for it.
