Q: How to get my dog to go into his dog house?

July 4, 2008 | By Jessica H. | 5 answers | Expired: 2287 days ago

We recently moved and my puppy is now staying outside. He used to be outside during the day, but came in at night to sleep. We bought him a nice, big dog house, but he won't go into it. I've tried putting his "old" blankets in it, but he just pulls them out. I've tried putting his food in there, but he just stretches in to eat (leaving his hind legs out). He won't even go in there when it is raining. Any suggestions?

You might not like my answer but think in terms of your pet.

I move you to some place like Russia. It is strange and different. I then take you away from the family. They are there in another part of the home, but not with you and you can no longer get to them when you want to. You also has nothing around you that you had before like a couch, rug, tv. I give you a very small closet to sleep in. You do fit in it because you can stand up, lay down and have just enough room now to curl up to sleep all alone.

And this closet is outside where weird noises are heard all the time at night. Noises you never knew of before.

Now how do you think your dog feels. You took him away from his family because now he is always outside. He does not have his favorite spot to sleep at in the house even if it is new he would still be with his pack/family.

I believe he is trying to tell you that he hates it outside by himself. Wouldn't you.

Oh the poor guy, sounds like he's afraid to go in. Maybe he's just not ready. Is he an "outdoor" dog? Maybe the combination of the "move" and staying out at night right away is too stressful for him. I'd allow him to get accustomed to his new surroundings first before making him sleep outside.

Dogs are Pack animals and are not meant to be alone. That's why they become barkers and go "crazy" when left alone. They NEED to be with their pack and do things together, like walking at least an hour or more EVERY day.
