Q: How to cut Guinea Pigs Nails?

August 13, 2009 | By SweetIcee | 5 answers | Expired: 1846 days ago

My brother's guinea pig has really long, gross nails, so I tried to help him cut them yesterday. We used a dog nail clipper and a human nail clipper, but neither seemed to work very well. Any suggestions?

normal nail clippers work just fine for guinea pigs just make sure they r sharp. to clip the front nails make sure to stick ur finger under one arm pit. clip above the the red in the nails. if u hit the red and the nail bleeds dont panic but sick the paw right away in blood stop. if u do not have blood stop i put a paper towel under the paw and put pressure one the bleeding toe. the blood will stop after a while. to clip hind feet flip piggy on back with two hands. one hand one chest and other on rump. when on back slide hand up to the top of leg and press. the leg will straighten. again clip above the blood line. if nails are black then clip very end. it is very hard to tell where the line is so clip a little at a time. if ur piggys is not used to being handled and clipped it will move around alot so do this with two pople. one holds and one cuts. if u do not feel u will be able to do this take ur piggy to a vet that specializes in small animals. they will clip he nails for u. good luck!

I don't know much about guinea pigs, but small bird nail clippers might work.

I forgot to mention, keep corn starch or flour on hand in case you cut too short and it bleeds. Just apply a bit to the nail and press it with your finger. It will stop the bleeding.

Cat clippers work well as do small human nail clippers. What color are the nails? Black ones are difficult to cut since it's hard to see the quick. I hold different guinea pigs differently to cut their nails. The calm ones just sit on my lap, facing away from me. I lift each foot with my left hand and cut with the right. If they squirm and you have an extra person to help, have them hold the guinea pig like a baby sitting up on their lap, facing away from them and towards you. Either you or they can hold one foot at a time, while you cut them. Clip off a SMALL amount at a time. If the nails are white, you can see the quick and slowly clip off more until you get near it. If the nails are dark, look at the inner part where you cut the nail after each clip. As you get nearer the quick, the inner part will get darker. The more often you clip the nails, the farther back the quick will go. If the guinea pig gets distressed, don't do all the nails at once. You can even wrap them in a towel to relax them while you cut or offer them bits of romaine. Good luck and let us know how it goes..... your vet assistant or local shelter can also show you how to do them.
