The average weight for a miniature poodle of average height (11-15 inches measured at the shoulder) is 15-17 pounds. there are several ways to tell if your dog is overweight. Feel his ribs. You should be able to easily feel the ribs. There will be a thin layer of fat over them, but each rib should be easily felt. Look straight down at his body from above while he is standing. He should have a defined waist just behind his ribcage. If there's no curve inward and he's either straight down the sides or curves outward, he's overweight. Also look at him from the side. A dog in the right weight range will have curve upwards (a sucked in or tucked up tummy) right behind the ribcage and in front of the hind legs. Again, if he's straight or saggy, that could indicate that he's overweight. Check the area above the base of his tail. It should feel smooth with only a light layer of fat. If you can't feel any bones or if there is extra fat padding and folds in that area, he's probably overweight. Your vet will be able to tell you if he is overweight when he gets his annual exam. This is one of the things they always check for.
