Usually at the beach the Hermit crab is free with the purchase of the cage. That of course varies according to the size.

First of all, how old are you? Hermit crabs are easily known as disposible pets but taken care of correctly they live a very long time. They are not ment to be "played" with. They have modified gills and need warm moist air to survive. It is recomended to only take them out for about 15 min a day and thats only if you have too. It stresses them out. Getting started cost the most. The food is easy. The tank and heater will set you back a bit. Purple pinchers are the easiest too keep and the cheapest. (The ones with the big purple claw) I suggest you take a look at www. landhermitcrabs.com before you get any crabs. They are really helpful and will answer all your questions. They are crab crazy!!! And they have a list of things you need to get started. We have had our crabbies almost a year now and I really do enjoy them. Yes they can be boring but I did get to see a shell change and it was worth the wait!!! Good luck! P.S. No painted shells!!! They are bad for the crabs!!!

they are more expensive than you think. when you add the cost of a good size tank, hermit crabS (because you need more than one) tank accessories, heating pads, food, sand, water (salt and fresh)... you can easily spend 100$ getting everything ready... and once you have them, sorry to say, they dont live long and dont do very much. I know... I had 4

like zoe recommended, check out a hermit crab book first. i had two hermit crabs as a kid, wildthing and stonehenge, and although i did enjoy them to some extent, they really aren't the most thrilling of pets. the best part about them is when they change shells...which is a little fun and a little gross to watch, too.
all you really need is a tank {which you will have to clean about once a week}, extra shells {they must always be progressively bigger than the shells your crabs are currently in}, a few rocks and hideouts to "play" on, and food....which i can't even remember what they eat!
get at least 2. i knew a girl who had a huge tank w/at least 10 in it...it was pretty cool. but other than looking at them, they don't actually do anything. they're not cuddly, not even snake or turtle "cuddly". and i can't say wildthing or stonehenge ever even gave me a good laugh. they're more like pet rocks that walk around. actually, i gave you a better idea - get a turtle. a land turtle specifically, much friendlier. and turtles actually are fun and live a long time.

Hermit crabs are boring. they hardly move and make alot of noise at night. though if you get one hermie you need two. hermit crabs thirive in the company of others. (edleast... I've gotten very far with that technique. some people don't agree. thats what my parents told me anyway.) hermit crabs won't break the bill, because they are not expensive. Because hermit crabs are small, and enexpensive.. does not mean you can toss them out of your home when you get tired of them. I recomend the book, quick and easy hermit crab care.
good luck!
