I have never had a rat live more then 2-1/2 years. I feed them right, keep them clean. I've had over 20 rats over the last 8 years and none of the has lived longer then 2-1/2 years.

Most of my rats have lived around 4 years, Houdini made it up to 5. However, therandog is right, the average is about 2.5 years. A lot of it seems to do with genetics, some are just hardier than others.
I'll tell you though, I saw a real difference in health when I switched out the pine/cedar shavings for CareFresh. The wood shavings have a volatile oil (phenols) that cause respiratory issues, and can shorten life spans.

Offering a wide variety of healthy foods also improved my rat's health, rather than just giving rat chow. I offered small amounts of fresh foods (carrots, grains, tiny pieces of cooked chicken, broccoli) and their coats looked much better.

My rats also had HUGE houses... 4 feet by 2 feet by 3 feet, and they got out often everyday. Lots of exercise and fun probably didn't hurt.

I don't mean to imply that you are not offering these things already, only wanting to share some variables that might have made a difference for mine.

Best wishes for a long life for your ratties!

2-4 years if you are lucky. For your rats to live 2-1/2 years is very good.
