Q: How Long Do Mastiffs (Or Other Giant Breed) Dogs Live?

December 12, 2008 | By Janet R. | 8 answers | Expired: 1941 days ago

I have an 8 year old Mastiff. He is definitely slowing down (though I am not sure he ever moved very quickly to begin with!?!)

I know that the charts say that most Mastiffs don't live beyond 10 years because they are so large. I guess this affects their hearts and joints.

Does anyone out there have any "success" stories about a giant breed living beyond this and, if so, what do you think accounted for it.

I hate the thought of losing my boy in another year or so.

Well, I noticed my large dog (golden retriever husky mix)was having hip problems causing him to become a lot more lazy and slow. We took him to the vet and the vet told us to go to the store (any drugstore) and buy Glucosamine. it helps with joint pain. If you notice your dog having joint pain, that's the way to go!

That is the sad thing about the larger breeds, but I wouldn't let that influence you decision about having a large dog. With good care, diet, exercise and regular vet care who knows how long they can live.
