I guess we had a bit of an unusual hamster. Ours lived 6 years. Almost 7. I think alot depends on how clean one keeps their cage, food area and water area. Plus we had a clear ball we would put her in and let her roam the house for excerise. THe cat was horrified of her. The cat would jump on the couch and not walk on the floors at all while "sugarbaby" was out in her ball. We may have just hit it lucky I don't know. They can be very sweet pets but keep in mind they are very tender animals, dont drop them, squeeze them and if in ball keep steps blocked. They can be alot of fun. Watch out about feeding fresh veggies they can get loose stools and it will kill them. Be sure to research them prior to getting one. Good luck.

it really depends on how you take care of the hamster. my previous one lived for two years and died of old age. my current hamster is now two and a half and still living. I really think my old hamster died because i used wood shaving bediing-which gives them upper resperatory disease. make sure you use carefresh or some other bedding without wood shavings!

I was just looking at hamsters myself at a pet store. A girl who worked there and who also owns hamsters said they live 2-3 years. Unfortunately, when I asked how old the hamster was that I was interested in, she was unable to say. All she knew was that he had been there for several months. With such a short lifespan, it's important to know that you're not buying a one year old hamster.
