Q: How long can a cat remember?

If a cat is brought from different homes during college years, can it remember all the homes and does it remember people if the person is gone for a long time and comes back? Just curious.

Don't have a scientific answer for you, but I had my cats for about three years, before I graduated and moved outta my parents house. The cats stayed there and while I did see them on occasion when I'd stop by, it wasn't a lot cause they're outdoors cats. But when I moved back in about a year ago, so three years after I first moved out, my cat cleo instantly took to sleeping at the foot of my bed again and was very upset to have my boyfriend living there. She'd jump off the bed and leave the room when he'd get home from work and stuff. Plus I know cats know voices, my will respond if they're within hearing range of my parents backyard when I call for them.

I am not sure. There are some things that I think my cat remembers from when she was a kitten and that was 12 years ago. I guess it all depends on the cat but I think most cats have the ability to remember things for a long time.

I believe they do remember a lot of things. You always hear those stories of cats traveling hundreds of miles back to a place they knew before. Cats are very loyal.

Cats can remember people for a long time. Friends that lived near me had two cats that liked me a lot. They moved away and I visited a couple of years later. Both cats ran over to greet me when I arrived. These cats would run and hide from strangers, so I’m sure that they remembered me.

I think cats remember waht they want to. Growing up we had a cat that we gave a way to someone that didnt live near us. A couple of weeks later it showed up at are house. As far as staying off the counters, I think they know they just dont care

I do know that after one of our cats dies, we can't say that cat's name for at least 6 months because the remaining cats will look for it. I think some experiences, especially if they are bad or hurtful, can cause a behavior adjustment that never goes away. Our one cat was abused when we got him at 2 years and now at 9 he will still cower at times when we go to pet him. Not a great answer, I know, but hope it helps.

My aunt and uncle have a cat that simply hates my mom. The cat and my mom had a staring contest a few years back, and my mom won. When we went back over a year later for a visit, as soon as the cat saw my mom, it screamed and ran away, hiding under my aunt's bed, and wouldn't come out for the rest of the time we were there. So I guess at least a year or so.
