Why do they rub in it?

I don't know why but we are gardeners and catnip grows wild. My cat LOVES it when I pull the "weed". She just rolls on it but doesn't eat it.

all of my current cats are addicts!! They go crazy on the nip! Many years ago I had a cat named Herman, and he loved fresh catnip. So I planted it in the yard...well he ate the entire plant!!!

From reading about it: The reaction only lasts for about ten minutes before the cat loses interest. It takes up to two hours for the cat to "reset" after which it can come back to the catnip and have the same response as before. Young kittens and older cats are less likely to react to catnip.

Due to the chemical in the plant. Not all of our cats have reacted with the same excitement.

Because they DO get high. Its a drug not really harmful. It invokes almost a hallucinogenic type experience. Thats why some bite people. They are seeing things that aren't there. Hope that answers your question.

My cat just got his first cloth mouse stuffed with catnip.
He surprises us how much he plays with it but I can't say I see any difference in his personality. He's pretty active anyway. He's still young.

They rub in it to get the smell on themselves. It has a natural chemical in it that they go crazy for

It's a chemical in the plant that makes them go crazy! My cat, Basil, loves the stuff. I let him sniff the whole bowl one time, and he just shoved his face in it! It was so funny!
