My dog loves to try to eat plants whenever I take him for a walk. While I can usually get the plant out of his mouth when he tries to eat one, he does sometimes manage to eat part of a plant. My concern is that he may one day eat a plant that could make him sick. How can i get him to stop eating plants when he goes outside?

whenever he stops to chew on a plant during a walk, you'll want to make a loud sound to get his attention and briskly move on. there are plenty of dangerous plants and i rarely see a garden w/o at least one. actually, it's more common to see at least four or five poisonous plants in a single garden.
you may want to consider the "leave it" command. offer your dog an object they want, say "leave it", and give them a treat w/your other hand that was previously hidden behind your back. practice this until he learns to stop at the sound of the command, not the sight of the treat. continue to reinforce this good behavior of ignoring plants w/treats until it really sinks in.

linda is correct therei s a smell badtastebad sprays for indor plants. asfar as the outdoor plants. you must keep better control on your dog.the people who own the plants may not be happy that your dog has pulled them out. to say nothing of your dogs health if he eats any of the wrong one. good luck

When you are walking your dog make sure you have his leash/harness well in hand so you can keep his head lifted when he gets near a plant. Just keep the reinforcing going with the plants. Also--you could take some lemon concentrate with you and when he goes to eat a plant just squirt a little of that on the leaves--it might work. :)

It's easy to find a list of poisonous plants. I'd recommend that you find out if any of the plants on your property are poisonous. If yes, remove them. When you take him for a walk, keep him leashed so you can keep him from eating plants.

For indoor plants I use Grannick's Bitter Apple. It's a spray that's available at pet stores. You might try taking a bottle along when you walk.
