Does your poop smell like roses? Neither do our pets.
There are some options for you if you can't stand it that much, though. The first is the type of litter you're using -- make sure you're using an odor-absorbent litter.
Secondly, clean out the litterbox as frequently as possible.
Thirdly, try placing a CITRUS pet deodorizer near the litterbox to help eliminate odors. Baking soda mixed in with the litter may also help.
Fourth, what are you feeding? Different diets produce different waste. Typically a higher-quality diet produces less feces (because there are less fillers in the food), which results in less smell.
And fifth, if you're just in over your head and don't want to deal with it, you can try a different type of litterbox. They have covered ones that come with a filter and even a little door on them, or if you have the extra dough you can invest in a self-cleaning litterbox.

It's been my experience that poop smells, it is waste matter.

We use pine litter to keep our litter box smelling fresh and clean. It doesn't mask the smell -- it actually neutralizes the odors. We use the Feline Pine brand. The cats love it and it really works! I also suggest that you clean the litter box often and look at the food you are feeding your cat(s).

You're kidding--right? You might try switching food (especially if you are feeding your cat canned food).....but waste is waste....and I'm afraid it's never going to smell good! :)
