Do you have names in mind before you get the pet or wait until the animal's personality comes through?

We usually try to name our pets based on something about either their personalities, their rescue, or something else. We always want the name to "fit." It doesn't always work out that way. We've had a couple that we rescued at death's door & dashed off to the vet with them. When we hurriedly filled out the forms we just had to put a name down & didn't have the luxury of thinking about it or even knowing the animal. That being said, those names often change & only become their name of record for the vet. Every one of them have nicknames that they know better than their given names.

We get all of our animals from the shelter. If they were with a prior owner and had that name, we try to keep if for the sake of continuity for the animal. If it's just a shelter name, we see what works best for the cat and change it if necessary

I always want to get to know someone new before I name them! Those that we foster are at times a bit more difficult since we make an attempt to not duplicate anyone currently at the shelter. The three newest girls were nearly Christmas puppies so they are Eve, Chrissy and Holly.

I had already picked out a name for my kitten before I got her. It was prophetic because "Prissy" fits her perfectly!

Actually when we went to get our Pom. (which was my Christmas Present) my husband had the name all picked out. Seeing our name starts with D, he decided the name was Mr. D. I asked him what would have happened if I had picked out a female and he said Mrs. D. Logical I guess

Usually after a couple days, they get their name. Most of our dogs were named after Norse Gods or kings.

Hrothgar is the king in Beowolf.

Aegir is the Norse God of the sea who holds lavish parties.

Freya (since passed) was the Goddess of Love and Beauty.

Loki (since passed) was the God of Mischief.

Idunn (new dog still need to add to my zoo) is the Goddess of eternal youth.

Harlem (since passed) came with his name to the shelter when his owner passed away. We adopted him and left his name.

Only Alarm and Differ got their names because they were part of a litter I rescued from death row and I was not going to keep any. I named the pups. Alarm because he was the one who always barked first when anybody went into the barn. Differ had the only black nose and dark colored eyes, so she was different looking. Venture was the first pup to venture out of the barn on his own while I was cleaning it one day. Sassy always back talked if you said anything to her. Dipstick has the white on the tip of his tail. Bully was the bully of the bunch.

Usually give them a couple days and the name comes quickly.

Of course, I am also the one who usually names all the shelter dogs and we try not to use the same name in the same year. Try coming up with over 600 names per year.

We name them once we have them. And, sometimes the name changes a couple of times before we stick with one. Personality and looks go into the decision.
