They leave the car running when the dog is inside. Locked, with an extra set of keys.

I would not recommend taking your dog with you in the car during the summer. I know it is tempting, I have often wanted to do it myself! However, living in Texas it is just not safe for my dog. He prefers to stay in my house during the summer enjoying the expensive A/C. Better safe than sorry.

The police have some high tech pricey equipment. They have a few different things. One they can leave there car on and lock the doors and have a pump like unit that is attached to the air vents that goes back to the dogs. Another involves a device the officer carries and will go off when the car reaches a designated temp or will turn on the car (I think that's right). There are some low cost units that I'm not sure how well they work (look in dog magazines or the internet) that you can put in the window (small square not the whole window) and it's a solar panel run that pumps in air. Just check around for the best option. You can also get window bars/cages that will allow you to leave the window all the way down without your dog getting out or anyone sticking their hand in. Never leave your dog in the car for hours at a time.
