Q: How do you get cats to become friendly after coming from another home?

February 19, 2009 | By Hrosenberry | 10 answers | Expired: 2092 days ago

We took in 2 cats from people that were selling there home (cats are not siblings). We can get one to come out but the 2nd cat will not come out while we are up and about but will come out to eat etc at night. Any suggestions as to how to get her to be "a pet"?

It will take time. How long is up to the cat,but if one of the new cats is friendly, the other one should come out of hiding too. Do you know which room they are staying in? If so, you could sit in that room and just talk calmly to the cat every day for a few minutes, without trying to catch or touch them, so that they get used to the sound of your voice.

I have a lot of cats and anytime I get a new cat (usually a rescue or foster cat) I first put them in a room by themselves for several weeks. Pick a small room where they are isolated from other pets. This way, they are not overwhelmed with the size of their new home right away when the arrive. After several weeks they will be entirely acclimated to the small area. It is then possible to open the door and let them come and go as they wish. This also works well if you have other pets who need to get use to a new pet. But in this case, you need to let your new cat out only when you can monitor them to begin with. Let them out of their own room for a couple of hours, then put them back in there until the next day. After a month or two they will feel as though they fit right in to your home. With cats, it takes a lot of patience to properly acclimate them to a new environment.

You can try putting some wet food out and maybe put the other cat away. Then maybe she will come out to get some of the wet food and you can just look at her and talk to her while she eats. That's what we did with a kitten we found. He was so scared, now you can't get him to leave you alone. All he wants is to sit on your lap and be petted.
