Not all people are pet people, when you have pets, how do you deal with the non pet people coming to your home during the holidays?

I know some of my friends get a little nervous when they bring small children into a house with large pets or rambunctious ones. It seems the best solution has been to let the pets grow on people and vice versa. Maybe the first time, you can start with a brief introduction and work from there.

Everybody knows we have dogs and at any given time foster dogs.I've always felt that if you are coming to our house you are coming into a 'dog home'.I've never had anybody say they wouldn't/couldn't come over because we have dogs.I don't believe we have any friends that don't have a dog or two or more.LOL I guess if it ever happened I'd gate the girls in the kitchen until the guests felt comfortable,if that ever happened. We kind of go by the adage."Love me,love my dogs."After initial introductions most of my dogs find a welcoming lap and park their butts there.

I make sure that all guests know I have a dog. Sometimes, I will keep my dog in the lower level of the house, if I feel the event may be too stressful for her. Be sure to consider what is best for your pet as well.

Unfortunately, I have gone to parties, etc. and was not told about any pets (I am allergic to certain animals). This proved to make me quite miserable, often having to excuse myself and leave the event altogether.

I don't pay attention.

Either they haven't been exposed to animals yet and do not know how great they are or they really don't like animals and the heck with them.

Most people who come to my home know it is a "dog house." However I do try to make sure the dogs are well run and fed before a dinner/party so that they aren't in everyones face. The cats aren't usually a problem but if someone is allergic I make sure that the air filters are in good shape and I try to accomodate these people as best I can without making my pets into an obstacle.

The poem pretty much says it all. My 9 cats and 2 dogs are my kids. Anyone who knows me is well aware of how I feel about them. Pretty much all of my friends and family are animal lovers plus we rarely "entertain". Tell your guests before they come that you have pets and leave it up to them whether they want to share the holiday with you. I have confined one of my dogs once and that was when there were children coming. He isn't the best around children and the kids aren't very respectful of animals so it was in everyones best interest.

Well, I have three dogs and my grown daughter hates dogs so when she was at my house for Thanksgiving yesterday and was very disrespectful to my dogs, I came right out and told her when she is in our house she will show respect to everyone that lives here, including the dogs. Best to set it straight right off the bat, that way maybe Christmas will go better.

I absolutely loved the poem in the other answer, everyone knows I have 13 dogs and if they don't want to come to my house because of that well, it's no big lose If they do come, they know what to exspect.

a friend here on z2 posted this a while ago i really liked and posted on my front door

My dogs live here, they're here to stay.
You don't like pets, be on your way.
They share my home, my food, my space
This is their home, this is their place.

You will find dog hair on the floor,
They will alert you're at the door.
They may request a little pat,
A simple "no" will settle that.

It gripes me when I hear you say
"Just how is it you live this way?
They smell, they shed, they're in the way
WHO ASKED YOU? Is all I can say.

They love me more than anyone,
My voice is like the rising sun,
They merely have to hear me say
"C'mon girls, time to go and play."

Then tails wag and faces grin,
They bounce and hop and make a din.
They never say "No time for you,"
they're always there, to GO and DO.

And if I'm sad, they're by my side
And if I'm mad, they circle wide
And if I laugh, they laugh with me
They understand, they always see.

So once again, I say to you?
"Come visit me, but know this, too.
My dogs live here, they're here to stay.
You don't like pets, be on your way.
They share my home, my food, my space
This is their home, this is their place."
