The hardest part... is don't give in! Offer him kibble: leave it out for fifteen minutes and then put it away. Do this at the same time every day for the same amount of time (fifteen minutes). DO NOT give him treats of snacks in-between feeding times, and keep all food up and out of his reach.

Dogs will not starve themselves, so he will eat eventually. You are showing him that his food is available for a specific amount of time and if he does not eat it then, then he doesn't get to eat until the next feeding time. You'll be surprised how fast he'll catch on!

As I said, though, the hardest part is DO NOT GIVE IN! Don't even sneak him one table scrap because it can set you back to square one. Be strong, and have patience! A healthy dog WILL NOT starve itself.

Good luck!

I agree with the others. If your dog is hungry, he will eat it. I think that it is important to pick the food bowl up each day after a certain amount of time has passed, whether he has eaten yet or not. When he gets hungry enough, he'll eat it and he will eat it at feeding time. Good luck.

Doc Jill is absolutely right. No healthy dogs will go hungry. Leaders NEVER share their food. I took in a dog from someone who could no longer care for her dog. She did,nt feed him dog food. For four days he turned his nose up and walked away. I would pick it up and do the same the next three days. Day five he ate the dog food like a little piggy. Plain dry food like my other dogs until the day he died.

I have used DocJill's method, and it works! Hang tough for the well-being of your pet.

I agree with Jill R. You have to go cold turkey on those kind of things. But if you feel too bad about going cold turkey buy your dog some high quality treats and food!

Be strong and stop cold turkey. No more people food, no need to wean him. And, if he's hungry, he will eat. Don't worry.
