Q: How do I stop my dog from growling and barking at other dogs?

March 13, 2008 | By Lori O. | 2 answers | Expired: 2210 days ago

my dog will be 2yrs old in a month and 5 months ago he started growling and barking at other dogs that in my opion is more dominant then he and those dogs use to be "his friends". He was attacked twice when we got him by larger dogs (luckily he was not hurt since I was walking him) so i can see why he might do that with large dogs, but he has always been a loving puppy who made friends with every dog he met kind of dog and know I am afraid he may jump any dogs we meet. What can i do?

Contact the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants www.iaabc.org and see if they have any recommendations in your area for a behavior and modification consultant. Basically what you will probably work on is to try and redirect your dog's focus back to you before he is distracted by the other dogs, reward him for focusing on you and ignoring the dogs. But a behavior consultant will be able to determine if their are any other issues you need to be concerned with and the best way to achieve your goal with your dog.
