Pure canned pumpkin (not pie filling)or baby food squash is good for hairballs. It adds fiber to the diet so it also is good for occasional diarrhea or constipation. Most cats will eat it as a treat, but if they won't eat it straight, you can mix it with their food. Also, brush your cat regularly to remove loose hair. This will help cut down on hairballs. Hairball medicine, vaseline, & mineral oil are good for short-term treatment, but they interfere with vitamin absorption, so don't give it anywhere near mealtime. Also, be aware that mineral oil is a light oil & can be inhaled into the lungs easily. Make sure you give it in a way that this won't occur.

My mom always put a dab if vaseline on their paw & they would lick it off. It can take a little while...but it will come up.

you can add a little canola oil to his food, any more than half a teaspoon can give him diarrhea though.
personally, i give my cats daily catnip - it helps their digestive track. that along w/weekly brushing stops hair balls.

There are many products that you can buy over the counter. However, I've found that plain old vaseline works wonders. Let the kitty lick a dab off your finger and it will be fine. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Have you tried over the counter hairball medicine, mineral oil or pinapple juice? Any of those won't hurt and may be worth a try.
