Q: How do I know if my Beagle has mange?

My 1 year old beagle has bald spots where he scratches and gnaws constantly. He also has a really bad odor. I have tried everything from conditioners and different shampoos to moisturize the skin. The vet has not been helpful at all saying it could be anything including an unknown allergy. He is miserable and so are we. He will chew himself so bad he becomes raw. Please help! I'm willing to try anything! Thank you so much!

The only way to know for sure if it is mange is for your vet to do a skin scrape, and check it under microscope.

I totally agree that tests at the vet is the way to go. If it does come back that it's not mange, I would suggest pulling your pup off all processed food that you can buy and put him on a diet of boiled chicken and brown rice. If it gets better with that than there is a food allergy and you will need to do a process of elimination with foods to see what it is that he is allergic to.

Keep in mind that there are two types of mange. Sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies, is highly contagious to humans. I would get your beagle to a vet ASAP to make sure you aren't at risk and to get it some relief.
