Bubbie will wait for 3 or 4 days sometimes before he eats his food. We give him Natures Best Chicken and Brown Rice, and have since we got him in February. It seems as if he is waiting to see if something better will come along. He was a shelter dog forever and we have one other dog, but he eats normally. Should I just stop worrying and let him eat on his own? His food is always out .

Hi, I had a similar situation recently with my Chihuahua. We moved and he stopped eating! I received some really good feedback and also talked with the vet. She said he'd eat when he got hungry. I tried all different foods and he would eventually eat something. Today I got a sample of Natural Balance Turkey Roll and he ate it up! I would think that your dog would have adjusted by now. You didn't mentioned if you had tried other foods. He may just not like that food?? I would talk with your vet and see what they have to say. He may be sick and need to see the vet. I know you are worried and it's probably just taking him a while to adjust but I would definitely take him to the vet since this has been going on since February. Is he losing weight? could he be getting food somewhere else, etc...? I wish you the best and hope he gets settled and starts eating right for you soon! Have a great holiday!

Tahki is a finicky eater too. He will only eat dry food mixed with something to wet it down. We started with the pedigree pouches, but have been using yogurt, just enough to coat the food. I think it may have to do with the fact that he is not a very slobbery dog, and he would actually have trouble swallowing the plain dry stuff. Even then, he will sometimes skip 3 or 4 meals. Make sure you're feeding fresh high quality food, the right amount, and maybe try a little yogurt, or even some low sodium chicken broth. Tuna juice works too, but that could be a lot of sodium over time. Try an additive... and he'll eat eventually.

Possible overfeeding, or even too many treats or snacks could be the problem. This probably happens more with the small breeds as opposed to the big ones. My Allie is quite picky as well, and she's 65 lbs! She was a shelter dog and perhaps that is part of the problem. She also has sensitive teeth and does not like large crunchy food. She will eat dry food that is small bites and likes chewy treats. She will not even eat a milkbone or anything hard.

Portion control is important. My sister has a Corgi that is supposed to eat only one cup of food a day. This dog is over 30 lbs and very healthy (show dog). I would think a smaller dog would eat probably a half cup a day, divided into breakfast and dinner.

Also, my dogs tend to prefer to eat when it is still cool in the morning, around 6am, and also they won't eat until the sun is down, around 6pm or so. They leave the food if I feed breakfast too late in the day, like 8am.

I hope these suggestions help!
