Q: How do I defend myself from the neighborhood dog?

August 4, 2009 | By Treasure W. | 9 answers | Expired: 1892 days ago

Well, there's this dog who lives in my neighborhood, and whenever I'm riding my bike, he's always running after me for no reason. Normally I am not afraid of dogs, but he was growling and barking at me. And he's never put on a leash!!! This was the third time this month that he did this to me. My mom says that I should fight with him, but I'm afraid that he might hurt me or have me killed. I want to be able to ride my bike again, but I'm scared that he'll run after me. What should I do?

I would have your parents speak to the owners! It is possible they are unaware the dog is running loose! However, if that doesn't work, I would take a picture of the dog and then call either your Humane Society or animal control. They can try to speak with and educate the owners. Whatever you do, do not fight the dog! I am hoping a resolution can be found to prevent this dog from running wild. This type of thing is not only dangerous for you and everyone else in the area, it is also dangerous for him! Good luck and please let us know how you make out!

i hate to say this but if you don't want the dog harmed try taking different route. it is the peoples foult for letting this dog run loose. it is the peoples fault not the dogs. as usual. it is a shame that the dog will be punished and not the owners. if this is not a solution for you call the humane socioty

do not call animal control or the dog warden, they are much more likely to have the dog put to sleep than the humane society. call the humane society instead. this dogs owners need some education about caring for dogs and need to be woken up about their dog being a threat.
do not try to handle this on your own or even try to befriend the dog w/o a professional supervising.

Don't fight the dog you can get seriously hurt if you do.

Call your animal control first-regardless if you know the dog or not...a mean dog at large is a danger to everyone in the neighborhood. If AC cannot get out there (or your area doesn't have one) call the sherrif's dept or the police.

If you know the dog, talk to the dog's owner about it...maybe they don't know their dog gets loose...

In the meantime, I would be armed and ready...I carry a can of pepper spray or mace with me when I walk the dogs-a lot of people just let their dogs run loose...a spray of that in the dogs direction will make him back off with enough time for you to get out of the area. One person I know carries a cattle prod for her idiot neighbors dog.

Keep calling the police, animal control, whoever until something happens before a someone gets bit really badly.

If you possibly can, take a photo of the dog on the loose so you can show animal control when your parent files a report. You should be able to file it anonymously so there are no repercussions to you or your family. We had a similar situation in my neighborhood. The owner told animal control their dogs weren't loose, but the photo finally proved it. Please be careful so you don't get bit.

Call your local dog warden or animal control officer. A dog like that should not be running loose. Not only is it putting you in danger but it is putting neighborhood pets and young children in danger of being bitten or attacked.

No, definitely don't fight the dog. Don't go anywhere near it. Do you know who owns the dog? You can ask your mom to talk to the owners for you. They shouldn't let their dog run lose to scare people. It's dangerous. You can call animal control and they will find the owners and talk to them about letting their dog run lose. They'll get a warning not to do it again. Stay safe.
