Q: How do I care for a month old puppy?

A few days ago we ended up with a puppy in our hands. Oh and by the way we didn't buy it, a guy was talking to us about it at the park and gave us very few details about the puppy and told us to watch it while he went somewhere and never came back. We couldn't just leave it there so we brought it home with us. We fed it and gave it a place to sleep in our house. We've NEVER had dogs before so naturally we have no idea how care for one. Can we bathe it? It's got watery eyes too I was wondering...is that normal? We are so lost, please help!!!

God Bless you for not leaving the puppy alone in the park - and what kind of person just leaves their puppy! Geeze.

Anyway, I would recommend taking the puppy to the vet. Puppies have to get vaccinated every 2 1/2 - 3 weeks for the first couple of months and the vet will also be able check the puppies overall health.

Most likely the watery eyes are not a big worry - a lot of puppies will get them - but it is always better to be safe so the vet can verify that as well.

Yes, you can bath a puppy. Like any other animal their skin can dry out from too many bathes but puppies do tend to need bathes more reguraly because they tend to get into things.

I recommend the following site for some general tips on puppies and puppy training.

And if you have any other questions regarding training and general care don't hesitate to ask. But please do get the pet to the vet just to make sure that this man did not leave you with a sick puppy that needs some additional care.

I entirely agree . . Kudos to you for taking in the poor baby. He/she needs to go to a vet immediately. the vet will probably also have recommendations on what sort of formula you should feed them at 1 month old as they should be still on their mothers' milk. Good luck!

Before you do anything bring the pup to a Vet, he probably needs med attention, a month is too young to be away from his mom, he could have anything, please don't let him be without an exam & blood work, if you don't want to do that please bring him to the SPCA or find a no-kill facility, they will rat him and find a home for him, a puppy will probably have a good chance of getting adopted, it sounds like he could have a respiratory infection or even pink eye (If the whites are red) but it could be anything, he will have to be wormed, all pups do, shots and a good diet for pups his age, good luck, I hope you decide to keep him, he had a rough start to life.
