I have had experience using California Natural Puppy formula to help put weight on a dog. You want to follow Marta's instructions, feeding normal size meals for the weight the dog SHOULD be. See a vet to determine what that is, and check for parasites.
dogtrainer is also right about informing the local shelters. Call animal control for the area where the dog was found and make a report, they will be happy to let you know of any other place you should contact if you ask. A dog can lose a lot of weight in a short time if they are lost - so please try to find an owner. If it is an unusual looking dog, or breed, you can call local vets to try to find an owner too.

Even if she is an adult dog feed her a good quality puppy kibble or high energy formula. You can add some wet food if you want, but not to much as there is no nutritional value in wet foods - they are about 85% water. There is a brand of dog food called Nutro that you can find in must pet stores. They have a High Energy formula that is higher in fat and protein than most other foods and would really help to put on some weight. Supplement her with some yummy, chewy training treats during the day also and this will help get her back to normal before you know it!

Bulking up my pup has been a challenge too. When I first got him he gained a few pounds right away, but trying to get five more pounds on him has been a struggle.

I used to mix in a heaping tablespoon of wet food with his dry food. Now I'm doubling up on the wet food. I'm not sure if this is working yet, but it would make sense because the wet food has a higher fat content.

Good luck!

Make sure you have alerted the proper authorities to make sure no one is looking for the dog. Just because you find a dog doenst mean it is a stray.....it might be, but who knows. There could be an owner out there looking for it. Most shelters you can put up a found poster and tell the officers the description of the dog and keep the dog at your house. I believe it is 2 weeks that you have to actively search for the owners, as in flyers, asking around, newspaper ads, alerting the animal control. It is against the law to harbor a stray. If I lost my dog the first place I would look is at the shelters. I would be heartbroken if someone just kept her cause they found her.

Forgot to mention. Has the dog seen a vet and been checked for parasites and had vaccinations?

Just pick a good food and feed her 3 times a day in amounts for her breed size. It's better to feed often than to feed large amounts all at once. It will take some time. If you not sure what food to feed ask your vet.
