How can you train dogs/puppies not to jump, and to calm down?

I have a 1 yr. old puppy and he's so hyper. Every time I go to play with him he jumps all over me and scratches the heck out of my arms and legs.

He is doing it to get attention out of you and any reaction IS attention in his eyes, so the best thing to do is cross your arms, turn around and ignore him. Also once you teach him to sit hten you can ask him to sit before you will greet/pet him. Another thing you can try is putting him on a leash and stepping on it so that if he tries to jump up he will self correct himself.

What your going to need to do is come down to closer to the level of the dog when you interact with him. If you stand up he'll want to jump up to greet you. If you squat down by him when you talk to him and ignore him when he jumps on you he will eventualy get the point that if he jumps on you that you'll ignore him. Just be consistent in your mannerisms with him when you are engaged in training behavior with him and be sure to reward him when he obeys. Consistency is the key, you have to repeat the same behavior to your dog every time so you don't confuse him.

Your puppy needs to learn which one of you is in charge. Takeing alot of walks and playing with him only after he has calmed down and waited for you to play will help teach him who is in charge. Giving him things to keep his mind active is also a good way to calm him down, kongs filled with peanut butter or other toys that keep the mind active helps alot.
