Q: How can people do this?

Tricia L.

How can people get a pet and have it for 10 yrs and then decide they need to "rehome" them?
I just dont get it.
Craigslist almost made me cry today!
I wonder how some people can think of pets as disposable things and others like us would never even think of rehoming our pets.
I wonder if its how we were raised?
ugh... poor pets....
*********THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL YOUR ANSWERS. IM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS WEBSITE. TO KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE YOU GUYS OUT THERE THAT CARE AS MUCH ABOUT ANIMALS AS I DO IS A GREAT FEELING.

I don't know why people do things like this. My daughter moved into an apartment that doesn't allow Pit Bulls so I took him with me because I didn't want him to go to strangers. He is so sweet. There are to many people that fights Pits & I was afraid that would happen to him. I don't people stop & think about the animals feelings.

Very good question.

I adopted a 9 1/2 year old dog. He had been with his family since being mere weeks old. One day, one of the "adults" decided they were done with the dog and just took it to the shelter (didn't even check to see if anyone they knew may have been able to give it a home). Here's a really sad part, within a few weeks, they had gone out and bought a new puppy!

I also DO NOT understand how people can do this. I am pleased to say we gave this dog a wonderful life, full of fun, energy, and purpose.

Times are hard for many people right now. I have 6 cats myself, and have every intention of keeping them for the rest of their lives. It's a sacred promise I made to them- BUT... what if I lost my house and had to camp out with friends, or live in my truck for a year? Sometimes, for some people, it really is a heartbreaking choice. Craigslist is better than dumping them at the pound, for sure. Of course, there are also the people who treat pets the way most of us treat worn-out furniture. Hopefully their animals will find better homes, and the losers won't adopt again in the future. It's too much to ask that their faces be branded for abandoning their animal family members, but it makes sense to me.

I can relate to this person. They probally do not see it as dumbing a pet off somewhere.I had to give a dog i had had for 5 years but i found that when he got sickk i couldnt care for him any longer and plus my mom was fixen to have a baby so we found a nice family to take care of him and i think it was a lot better for him that him felling neglected by the lack of care and the attetion the baby would take up....So please next time dont judge becouse sometimes the people have good and welll ment reason behind the deciosin they make:)

This is one of the things that really makes me angry. I mean come on Craigslist?! That's the best you can do for your furry family member? It just really frustrates me.

It is something I will never understand either. In today's society everything seems to be disposable. If a marriage isn't working, get a diviorce. If there is an unwanted pregnancy, abort it. If you don't want your pet, throw it out. Too many people don't take full responsibility for their actions and commit to the choices they make. They don't want to work for anything. As for me, I promised my pets their home with me would be their last and I intend to keep that promise.

People are also just dumping pets they don't want outside. We have that problem at my job site. It is a drop off field for unwanted dogs. I am always contacting the SPCA. I have taken in a re-homed cat 7 years ago. I am glad that she has adjusted to the home well and is very loveable. I've also adopted a cat that was dumped out near my house. He is a wonderful loving cat too. I have read articles about cats having feelings and I know that re-homing must have a terrible affect on animals. There is no excuse for it other than death of owner!

People just throw them away like yesterdays newspaper - to never give it a second thought.
Mine are my kids and they are just as happy as can be.
I am so thankful - I am different than any of theose people.
