Q: how can i train my dog to not run away?
we have had abby for about a year, she is a three year old black lab. she was not trained at all by her old owners, and now i cant seem to train this dog to do anything. i wouldnt even care as long as she didnt run away, or came when she was called! i have a fenced yard and she is like houdini and gets away and runs, i have had to chase her for several blocks in my pajamas and barefoot, and i cant take it!!! i love this dog, and we took her from a sad and terrible situation but how in the world can i get her to stop doing this??

I agree with daryl. He just wants to play. My Baxter used to slip through the door (we live in a second story apartment) and take off every chance he got and we would end up chasing him around. He would let us get within a foot of him and then race away (he is a 20 lb terrier mix so he was very fast!!). What we did is we let him run and when he came back he got a treat, so he learned that being close to us instead of running away has benefits. I also started walking him twice a day for 30-45 minutes so he can have his "outside time" and running away to explore isn't such a temptation. If it is a frequent problem and you're afraid that one time you might not be able to catch him, I would highly recommend getting him a microchip. Hope this helps!
