Q: How can I teach my Bichon Frise to stay calm while getting blow dried?

My bichon frise puppy is only 3 months old but I want her to get used to being groomed because this breed requires a lot of it. She's okay during bath time, but barks like crazy and freaks out when I blow dry her. I have the dryer on the lowest setting and its on cool, so I know she's not in pain or anything. Am I just not being patient? Or is there a correct training technique that I can try so she will learn to realize that being groomed isn't the end of the world. HELP!

I give my Maltese vitamins called ContentUm that help them calm down a bit. Its not the end all cure, but it helps a bit. My dogs took a while to get used to the groomers as well, but now they love it! Your puppy is still little, I'm sure she will get better as she grows up.

I think blow drying is probably the most stressful part of grooming for pets if they're not used to it. They can develop a real fear of grooming so you should introduce the puppy to the dryer gradually & reward good behavior. Turn your blow dryer on around your puppy every day. If you blow dry your own hair, take her in with you while you're doing it. Let her get used to the sound & let it blow on her for a few seconds from a little distance. If she stays calm, give her a treat. If she gets scared, just try blowing near her but not on her. Always reward her calmness & end every blow dryer session with a treat. That way she'll associate something good with the blow dryer. Just gradually increase her time around it, reward her, & once she gets used to the sound, she'll probably love the dryer. Good luck.

Dogs do not have to be blow dried when they are groomed a towel works just as good and most dogs even the big ones are scarred of the blow dryer which they have a big kennel with a big blow dryer and they put the dog in it at the groomers I see this at petco all the time and the dogs are always crying or cowering or even barking cause they want out. I would say just use a towel and then brush her really good.
