Q: How can I properly train a dog

I agree with the clicker idea. I like to use treats in combination with the clicker. Treat everytime she gets it right, and praise her. Eventually she will figure out that good things happen when she listens. Gradually reduce how often you treat her until she is just listening out of habit. Taking her for a long walk BEFORE you try to train will help reduce her energy so she will pay attention. Some breeds are harder to train than others, so it is possible that you might need doggie obedience school or a trainer. Repetition and praise and patience are required. Hugs. Goodluck :)

If you have no experience it is best to go to a professional dog trainer. Improperly trained dogs are as bad as untrained dogs. Training is as much about training the person to respond correctly as it is the dog. Not all trainers are created equally so do your homework. Ask other dog owners in your area who they use. Ask dog rescue groups who they take their dogs to. Most end up using trainers at some point and after rescuing them, they're not about to turn them over to a bad trainer.
