Q: How can I get my dogs to retrieve?

I have two lab-mutts. Both will chase a tennis ball or other toy if thrown, but neither will actually bring it back to me. They just end up chasing each other around the yard or living room.

try different toys ( Frisbee, ball, ect) then offer a treat if they return it. It took my lab months to figure it out!

I'm lucky. I actually have a cat that will play fetch! It's got to frustrate you that they wont bring it back to you but it sounds like they're still having fun!

My greyhound chase nothing I throw, they will chase squirrels, or rabbits, my Black Lab chases whatever I throw, runs away with it & stashes it away.

some will naturally retrieve some wont. Its best to have one at a time to do this. as they are labs they should pick up fast.I had border collies and 2 out of 4 would go and retive. sometmes watching anothe rone works. one thing to do is have them on a long lead. say fetch and have them pick it up and say bring hold th elead and walk towards the dog .if they bring and dont let go , ask them to release.gently pry the ball out and say good boy/girl and try again sometimes it work some times not. we have pit mixes one brings the other doesnt. we have border labs that bring in thehouse but not ourside. they are afraid they wont get thier prize back.make sure not to yell or punish. good luck ball on a rope. start in a smal room even one dog at a time. take alot of time an dpractice

Ok, I know it's hard because I wanted to try ro get my dogs to retrieve things too. What you do is get a bunch of treats (don't let the dog see it because they will be more into the treat than the ball.) Throw the ball, when they get it show them the treat and call their name. Make sure they bring the ball back. When they do give them a treat and say good boy/girl and make him/her feel good. Do this again a couple times, until you think it could do it without a treat. Try without treat. If they lose intrest, just try again the next day. Eventually he/she will get it right. Hope I helped!!!

Our german shepard/chow mix will sometimes bring a toy or ball back to you but she is like our pit, they want you to play tug of war or chase them for the toy.
