Q: How can I get my cat to use the litter box?

November 25, 2008 | By Sally B. | 6 answers | Expired: 2203 days ago

Sally B.

My cat just refuses to use the litter box. I have used just about every type of litter out there. She is accustomed to going out in our yard, but with it getting colder, she doesn't want to go out as much. I would like to get her use to a box, thinking maybe she will stay in all of the time. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Along with all the other good ideas you've gotten, try to see if the litter box is in a good location for her. A lot of times we put them where we like and not where the cat would like it. Is it private enough, is there a lot of noise nearby? Is it hard for her to get at? Is there an easy escape route, if she is surprised by another animal or a person. Some cats are really skitish if they are interrupted. Is the litter scented.? Most cats don't like scented litter. Do you clean the box faithfully?
Hope some of the suggestions work for you. Keep trying. I know it can be frustrating, but there is usually a good reason a cat stops using it's litter pan or wants to go outside. Good luck.

Try using some outdoors dirt as kitty litter as it is familiar to her.

There is a litter product available called "Cat Attract." It is supposed to attract cats to their litterbox and make them want to use it. I have never used this product, so I can't say if it works or not. Maybe check for it under the product review section of Zootoo to see if anyone has had success with it. Good luck.

This may seem like a strange thing, but check your cat for worms. For some reason, when they have worms - which can really be very common, they don't like to use a litter box as much.

I would try confining her in a dog crate with a litter box her bed and food and water. Not a huge crate you dont want her to have room to deficates anywhere but the box. I would add some off the stuff called attract to the box in the beginning.Just be consistant it may take awhile.

Try and use a uncovered litter box if you are using one with a lid/door. Also try an empty box at first.
