Q: How can I alter this annoying habit?

March 13, 2008 | By Peggy G. | 2 answers | Expired: 2310 days ago

My 10 year old male JRT was neutered when he was 6 months old. However, he continues to masturbate at least twice daily. He goes into another room and hides until it's over. The problem is that sometimes he bites himself to such an extent that he bleeds all over the carpet. What can I do to discourage this behavior? I've tried monitoring him, but if I turn my head for an instant it's too late. I also don't want to make him nervous by constantly commanding him to stay where I am. I gave him a prescribed relaxation medication for awhile, but I saw very little improvement.

It sounds like it may be an obsessive-compulsive disorder problem. I would recommend doing some research on that topic and consulting with your vet. Medication does sometimes help in this type of situation. You may also want to get referred to qualified behaviorist. (This is different than an animal behavior specialist and may be quite expensive. Research and consult with your vet first.)

I would ask the vet..or someone who is very informed with the matter like this.
