Q: How big will my puppy grow?
Can I predict how big my puppy will become, as a full-grown dog?
Chosen Answer
Your puppy's adult size can be predicted, more or less, from the pup’s parents’ sizes — if you can find them. There is a reasonably accurate formula for predicting ultimate weight — if you know the exact birth weight.
Small breed dogs typically multiply their birth weight by a factor of 20. So a 5-pound adult Chihuahua probably started out as a quarter-pounder. The growth factor for medium breeds is 50 and for giant breeds, 80.
Small breeds should reach their adult weight around 8 months. Larger breeds get too heavy to lift between 18 and 24 months.
