Q: Host has an angry cat.

Host has an angry cat.

When we visit our grandsons, their cat resents the dog, sneaks up on her, ready to attack. I keep the dog near me, often on a leash, but everyone gets upset when they snarl and bark. So far, no blood, but I hope we can do better.

Giving the cat a safe space will help to reduce the tension.  If you visit on a regular bases you may want to try and introduce the two by using the tips for adding new pets.  A toy/blanket/etc with the the dog's scent can be given to the cat.  Place it near it's food/treats so it begins to associate nice things with the dog.  Let the dog walk all over your Grand children's home (after the toy step) to spread the scent out further.  You can let them meet by placing the cat in a carrier and letting the dog sniff it. Make sure that they are both cuddled and rewarded when they are together. If they don't settle down after a few short visits and time outs they may need to be kept apart

it is normal for a cat to be defensive of her/his home. Most are too afraid to actively go after a strange dog, but they are upset by the canine visitor just the same. I would reccommend that when a visit is planned, the cat be confined to a quiet room in another part of the house (perhaps a bedroom0. Provide a litterbox, water (& dry food if this is your normal routine), & a few favorite toys or blanket. Put a note on the outside of the door requesting that people do not enter.
Rather than feeling isolated, the cat will most likely appreciate the chance to relax. And avoiding face-to-face contact with the dog will definitely benefit both feline & canine--much less stressful!!

If you must have the dog with you, I suggest you keep it in a separate room from the cat. The cat is protecting its territory. The dog is a guest; keep it away from the cat. Take the dog for long walks. Love on it in YOUR guest room.
