Q: Host and adoption day??

February 2, 2009 | By Cspears2 | 3 answers | Expired: 1891 days ago

I would like the shelter I volunteer at to have an adoption drive. How do I go about suggesting this without insulting anyone while also volunteering to handle it? Our shelter is becoming a little crowded!

Remember everyone there is there for the same reason, for the animals. So if you have a good idea let them know maybe they never thought about it.

Just say, "hey, what does everyone think about an adoption drive?" This will open up the conversation, and then you can volunteer yourself.

I would find out who the shelter PR person is. At our shelter they are the person that you'd want to talk to about a possible adoption event. If you are thinking about a smaller event, as in taking around 5 animals to a pet store to show off to the public then they might just let you and a few other volunteers (with the help of the volunteer coordinator) hold the event with little additional work being created for the shelter employees. If you are thinking on a larger scale, for instance having the shelter open an additional two hours in the evening for a special on adoptions there will be a lot more work that is entailed. The shelter would have to have the funds to pay the staff for the additional hours (which might be overtime) and there would have to be a way of guarenteeing that more than one or two animals are going to get adopted inorder to pay for the event or to make the event worthwhile to the sheleter. It takes a lot of time and effort for the shelter to put on extra adoption events! Good luck!!
