Why don't you check rescues. They have some wonderful horses, including this breed. Some past zootooers who competed in equestrian did so with horses adopted from rescues. A lot of horses, just like our other companion animals, are suffering and dying horrible deaths because there aren't enough homes for them. Many people who had them can no longer afford the vet care or to feed or board them so they're going to slaughter. Routine vet care alone is about $300 to $500/year for worming, teeth, and vaccinations. Add an injury or illness and boy do those equine vet costs shoot through the roof. One foot injury for my horse cost so much before it was over that I could have paid off my car! In this economy, a lot of people, even longtime horse owners, aren't able to continue so horses are ending up on the auction floor being bought by killers and sold to slaughter houses. We were trying to raise money to rescue 32 registered thoroughbreds, many of them in foal, that were headed to slaughter last month. A longtime rancher and horseman could no longer afford his pasttime. If they're lucky they end up in rescue, so you should check rescues and give two a second chance -- the one you rescue and the one that gets to take its place.
