I did when my dog was going through heartworm treatment. She was a recent rescue & the treatment was making her really sick so I used petfood recipes using chicken & prepared her food. I've also done it for my cats when they're sick or have had surgery. I'd do it all the time if I had time.

I prepare my dog's own food every day. Actually, he eats 3 times a day. My dog had a food intolerance and the vet suggested purchasing the book Home-prepared dog & cat diets: the Healthful Alternative by DVM Donald R. Strombeck. There are many recipes in this book to choose from. Not only for dogs with an intolerance but healthy dogs too. The diet that our dog is on is the fish/sweet potato/cottage cheese/ bonemeal/ canola oil and 1/2 human multivitamin. You can also substitute chicken for the fish. He is much leaner and healthier looking. He use to growl and bark at us when we put his dog food down to eat. I would usually end up feeding him myself. Forkful by forkful. He would just end up sick the next day. Vomiting bile. I tried many different dog foods and he wouldn't eat one of them or none of them agreed with him. He now barks at us when we are a little late giving him his food. I am so happy he enjoys eating and believe it or not he hasn't been sick in over a year. One year to the day. I also feel that it is much cheaper preparing his food because I would spend a lot of money purchasing different dog food from the internet spending money on shipping/handling and then end up throwing it away. Bon(e) appetit!!!

I sure would & have been thinking about it seriously with all of the pet food recalls, it sure would be safer.

Whenever I roast a turkey or cook a whole chicken I take the skin, fat and other parts I don't want and mix with cooked brown rice and carrots for my dogs. They love it. I don't give them too much at one time and you can add other left overs to it. I have 6 dogs so couldn't cook for them everyday.

Sometimes I do, but it is best to give them their healthy dog food. Try going on the internet and look up some special dog food recipes. Your dogs will LOVE you if you do this!

Why not? If I had all the time in the world. At least I could make sure that it had everything in it that is needed, no colors and fillers and stuff like that.

I thought about it but I would not know where to start. I guess I'm just to lazy.

Absolutely, yes! I'm actually looking for a good all natural cookbook for dogs. I've done a lot of research online and written a dog food guide but I am still doing research because some people say garlic is good for your dog and others say no. So I'm still trying to figure out food inconsistencies. My dog always feels special when I give him something from the oven!

I would and have. When my pup Daquota got sick I had to keep her on a low fat diet so I made her food - chicken and rice. Wasnt hard, but I had to make it every couple days.
