Q: Heartgard NOT working

May 8, 2009 | By Safari2010 | 6 answers | Expired: 1790 days ago

My lab has been on Heartgard faithfully. We live in the deep south and I have never missed a month giving him his dose. He has heartworms now. Has anyone had this problem. Buying heartgard from my vet his entire 8 years of life.

My dogs also use heartgard and they are checked once a year for heartworm even though they have been treated since puppies. The vet told me that it is kind of like the pill it works 99 percent of the time. So there is still that 1 percent chance that although treated a dog can still get heartworm. Sorry to hear about your dog. Your vet should have told you that it is not 100 percent.

Definitely contact Heartguard and your vet regarding proof of administering it. We always used Interceptor with no probs.

I've heard Heartguard will take care of the Vet bills, I'm sure your Vet has records that you've used it each month I think it has to be for at least a year & a record showing your pet was tested for heartworm before the meds started, I've always used interceptor every month & have a test done every 2 yrs, even if they pay the treatment isn't easy for your your pet & the worry your will go thru, I wish you and boy good luck.

It is true Heartguard will stand behind the effectiveness of it's product and will reimburse the vet bills for a dog's treatment should it be tested heartworm positive and it can be proven that the dog was on heartguard year round. You will also want to make sure that your vet sends out a blood sample to a private lab for testing before you start treatment....'false' positives do happen from time to time. Best of luck!

I had a recent question about heartworms and someone answered my question and said they had the exact same problem that you are having. They had records showing they had purchased the heartgard faithfully and the company paid their vet bills. Someone else said they if they missed one month their vet wanted to re test for heatworms.

Contact Heartguard, I can't say as I have heard of this problem before, but they are supposed to back up their product. You might be able to get they to help pay for his medical bills.
