Q: Has anyone had experience with allergy shots?

December 11, 2008 | By Sonja J. | 6 answers | Expired: 2185 days ago

My husband wants to try getting shots for his pet allergies - has anyone else had experience with this? Do they work well? He's allergic to both cats and dogs. We currently have two cats we take care of, but can't have the cats in our home because of his allergies.

I have been taking allergy shots for over 10 years and they have really helped me. I am allergic to both cats and dogs. I have been retested twice and I have gotten less allergic to both cats and dogs. If your husband hasn't been tested yet, definitely get this done first. I go to a clinic that not only checks on what you are allergic to but how allergic you are to things. I give my own injection every week. Other allergists do them at intervals. My daughter is also on allergy injections and has been on them since last summer. She is doing wonderful! Go for it - cats are great companions.

my step dad is extremely allergic to cats. He has been getting allergy shots for a few years now. He no longer has a problem around cats. We have seven in our household.

I started allergy shots this past March. 3 weeks ago I made it to my "maintenance" vial. The most concentrated dose I will get. So far they have been working very well. I also have to take an antihistamine with it or they won't let me get my shot. Currently I take a newer med called xyzal. Combined they have made a major improvement in my allergies (including pet allergies). I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and I am allergic to both. I am extremely allergic to my fiancé's parents' cats and since I have been on these I can actually stand to be there for at least a day before the reaction gets bad (in the past it would get bad within 15 minutes).
I say go for it.

One of my co-workers is allergic to everything, including cats and dogs. She gets allergy shots, but still has reactions when she touches the animals. However, my mother's friend gets shots for cat dog allergy and she's fine around fur. So, maybe it's an individual thing. Worth trying!

I'm allergic to cats and I have 9. I take the generic of Claratin I get over the counter at Sams club a 6 months supply is $18. I have been taken it for 5 yrs now. I would try that first before you get into expensive shots

i used to get allergy shots for my other allergies (not cats and dogs), and they worked great. I never had to take a benadryl, claritin, zyrtec- anything like that. I took those shots once a month for at least 5 years. Tell him to go for it.
