Q: Has anyone had any health issues with Costco dog beds with the cedar scent?

January 28, 2009 | By Petartist | 6 answers | Expired: 2139 days ago

After I bought the Costco dog bed that smells like cedar, my Golden had a seizure. After the second seizure, I threw the dog bed away as it was the only thing different in her environment and I had a bad feeling about that bed because of the smell. She hasn't had another seizure since I threw the bed away but has developed a skin disease called Pyogranulomatous dermatitis and panniculitis. She has over 30 hard nodules all over her torso which was caused from something in her environment. The only thing that changed was the bed and we have three other pets with their own beds (not from Costco) and they are fine. I don't know for sure the bed caused her condition but it was caused from a toxin that will take 3 years to get out of her system. I'm wondering if anyone else with these beds have experienced any health issues with their pets.

In the book Merle's Door on page 149 there is a comment about Cedar Chips and allergies because of the plicatic acid in the wood of cedar trees.
I looked thru my Doctor's book of Home Remedies and The Total Dog Book but couldn't find any information on cedar chips....but obviously, if this is the only environmental change, it would seem to be the problem.
Unfortuntely, I am going thru the same thing but haven't been able to pin down the reason for my dogs "rash" under his arms (think it might be sidewalk salt). Good Luck

Mention this to your vet. Notify the company, too. Maybe he has a reaction to cedar like mentioned previously.
