Has anyone had a pet die while at the groomers?

My cat, Gucci died this past Sat. while at the local Petco groomers. They told us that she had been fusy and used a muzzle. They said that she sighed once - they checked her and continued grooming. She sighed a second time and they proceeded. On the third sigh she died. I feel that using the muzzle added more stress and that the groomers should have recognized the anxiety that she was under and simply stop. The groomer had told me and my husband that we should leave her a number in case she was having a hard time... again, why didn't she just stop!?
A necropsy was supposed to be performed today but Petco froze the body and now have to wait until tomorrow. The issue we have with this is that we told them to ensure that Gucci was refrigerated and not frozen, as freezing ruins the tissue/cells..
Does anyone have any advice on this?
I am missing my kitty sooo much. It's just not the same without her. :(

So sorry for your loss...how awful to be going through this. :o(

I would contact the Better Business Bureau and get a lawyer ASAP if you haven't already.

As a former groomer, especially when grooming cats any signs of distress we would stop and call the owners. I have heard many horror stories about Petco and Petsmart's grooming.

This is devastating news! I am so, so sorry for your loss of Gucci! The first thing I would like to say is that I am wondering if they froze her to cover up something. I would hire an attorney and not let Petco get away with this. It sounds to me like this was completely avoidable! Good luck, my friend... I hope justice prevails in this one!

I am VERY sorry for you loss. She was sooo adorable!! Unfortunately i have heard of these cases MANY times. :( There have been so many stories and investigations on the news about PETCO and PETSMART. They just hire people with very little experience most of the time. I would not trust them with my pets at all. It is always best to take a pet to a local private groomer that you can get to know and trust. They usually have more experience than PETCO and PETSMART. Ours here does not keep the animals in cages. They let them all play & assoicate with one another unless they are getting groomed.
