Has anyone had a large breed dog have hip replacement?

Our German Shepherd, Niki, his hip dysplasia and requires hip replacement surgery. She will be 8 years old in September. Our vet says she is in the top 10 worse cases he has seen. We love our pets and take our responsiblity to care for them seriously. I would just like to know a little from someone who has been through this about the rehab, etc.

I would also additionally get ahold of the breeder and let them know that your GSD has hip displaysia. Unfortunately, this is a hugely prevalent problem with GSD's, and good breeders will want to know about the dogs they breed and how they fare in life. Probably other pups related to yours developed it as well, and the breeder will want to make sure to spay and neuter the parents (if they haven't been already) and test their other lines for this disease.

Also, I know that water therapy is a good, low-resistance exercise for recovering dogs. You can find more information here: www.caninewatertherapy.com/links.html

I wish the best to you and your dog!

My friend's dog had both hips replaced and she did great. It does take patience and some physical therapy, but the results can be amazing.
