We have a Golden Retriever and two Chihuahuas. I love them all and am amazed at how different they are. Our Golden is sweet, let's the kids climb all over her, and was sooo easy to house train. My Chihuahuas are very needy. They want to be in your lap at all times and shake like crazy when they realize you are leaving the house. They were also a lot harder to house train. I love both breeds. It sure would be nice if my Chihuahuas had the temperment of our Golden though. LOL

I would suggest going to a dog show, meeting some breeders of both breeds, and getting to know some of their dogs. Most people at dog shows are happy to discuss their breeds and their dogs in particular. This could give you a better idea about the pros and cons of both breeds for your family.

It is true that most chihuahuas tend to be high strung and nervous. That usually has to do with socialization. I have a chihuahua that was given to me as a gift and most people that come to my house say they have never seen such a friendly outgoing chihuahua. It takes work, but it is better for the dog not to let them rule the house (chihuahuas think they rule everything lol) I agree with several of the answers above, you really cannot compare goldens and chihuahuas as breeds rather decide for yourself what your life with the dog would entail. They are both wonderful breeds if properly cared for and trained.

My mom has always had at least one chihuahua around the house. They would often run out from under the couch and bite people's ankles for no reason. She loves them all but I would not have a dog that bites.

My friend raises chi's and you couldn't ask for a better socialized puppy. She spoils them rotten and her two younger daughters help make them so very sweet. They have the puppies paper trained at 4 weeks. She uses a small liter box with newspaper in it, great idea. I think with any breed it has so much to do with how they are socialized so young helping to make a very good temperament.

The Golden is (along with the Lab and G. Shepherd) the easiest to train. Goldens are devoted family dogs that seem to add a word to their vocabulary every day for the first year. Most Goldens will greet your mailman with a tail-wagging grin. I would look no farther than them.

Chihuahua's can be very mean. In my opinion people always think that a "chihuahua is so cute and never realy try to train them, they are veiwable dogs, they don't need to do anything but make us look good." I have a 4 year old Chihuahua and my 2 year old Lab is MUCH better behaived than him. I love them both, but I would deffinatly sugest a Golden Retreiver over a chihuahua. Bigger dogs are much easier to house train, and sometimes little dogs never completely house train. Aslo if you resurch a little I think you will find that chihuahua's are responsible for a lot of infant deaths. In my experiance a golden would be a much more relaxed, and easy going kinda of dog.

Chihuahuas tend to be one person dogs. a handful are friendly to anyone but alot of them are very protective of their owners and can be pretty snippy. they are very loyal to the person they choose, and most that i have experienced are pretty good with training, but they can be stubborn. I definately wouldnt have small kids near most chihuahuas, most are scared of kids because they are small and get nervous they will get hurt. Goldens are good natured smart dogs, just do research for where you get one from.

I had a friend that had 2 chihuhuas and they did not listen at all. They used the bathroom everywhere. They are horrible with smaller kids, hard to train, and they ran around crazy! I personally would never get one. They are a little vicous. If you are looking for a small dog then how bout a Maltese. They listen great!!! And like doing tricks. My Morkie walks on her back legs. THey are easy to train and listen great! If they have any dog breed books at the library read them. Then it will be easy for you to choose. I never knew anyone with a golden retreiver but they look beatutiful but they do have alot of long hair.

Golden retrivers are very loving, a little energetic sometimes. Usually tend to be great with kids and families. Chihuahuas can be all of the same things but, more of them tend to be a little tempermental or a one person dog. I'm not an expert or anything. Just my opinion. My mother has two chihuahuas that are great with her and the family, even small children but, very tempermental towards other dogs and eachother. Golden retrievers I've seen are very easy going and relaxed. I think it also depends on the owner too.
