Q: Hamster's eye problems

September 22, 2009 | By Prairie | 5 answers | Expired: 1900 days ago

My little teddy bear hamster is about 2 years old. He has one eye that seems to be "glued" shut most of the time. I take a cotton ball and try to soak his eye for a bit and then it comes open. But then the next day it is shut again. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what could be the problem?

Call a vet and ask. Could be something serious - or they may can tell you something over the counter to buy.
Don't ever pry eye open, though. Good luck!

It sounds like some type of eye infection, such as conjunctivitis. This would require prescription eyedrops. Your hamster needs to be examined, diagnosed, and treated by a veterinarian. Untreated eye problems could result in blindness.

What your doing is helping your little hamster with the discomfort he's feeling, but it does not stop it, it's a temporary solution, a Vet should be called ASAP,
