Q: Getting Papers for my dog

May 11, 2009 | By Mom2daschund | 6 answers | Expired: 1975 days ago

I have a 1 1/2 year old daschund. I got her as a gift from my boyfriend and we didn't get any papers for her. I am trying to get in contact with the seller. My question is if I can't get the papers if any from the previous owner can I get new ones. I only had her for a month and I was going to take her to the groomers and thats when they said I needed updated rabies papers and I forgot all about getting papers. What should I or can I do? Please help?!

Usually you can't lisense a dog unless it has a rabies shot so if you know the name of the breeder and if the dog was lisensed you should be able to find out when it was done through your town hall where the lisensing is done.

I agree with Rockadade...take the puppy to your vet first before doing anything. Have them run a vaccine teiter on the dog (its a blood test) to check for immunity BEFORE you re-vaccinate. Rabies vaccines especially can have major side effects if they are doubled up on.

Get a full panel done on the bloodwork, a vaccine teiter, stoll sample, heartworm test the works. THEN revaccinate if necessary.

Vaccinations can cause side effects. Before you do anything, try to get to the seller or their vet. If you can't get the seller, try calling around to the vets in the area to find out if they were your dogs vet.

DO NOT VACCINATE UNLESS AND UNTIL you are sure that the vaccs are needed or you absolutely can not get his prior records. You may also be able to get rabies records through your local dog licensing agency.

What ever happens, do not vaccinate you dog until he has had a complete check up nose to tail including temp and you are sure he has no other issues going on at the time.

I agree, I'm dealing with a Parvo puppy, it's not fun... when it's over, he will be a happy healthy dog. They don't all turn out that way... .take your dog to the vets and get a FULL physical and shots, we owe it to them, like I said in another post, they don't have a voice, we are their voices, forget the papers and have your vet do a work up on him. Good luck!

If you do find the previous owner ask who the Vet was, they should have a record if you can't find anything out take your pet to your Vet & get the shots, my rescued Black Lab had no records but I just took her to my Vet and had everything done, there shouldn't be a reaction, but ask the Vet, your pet should have been to the Vet already for a physical, mine all go to the Vet the same week I get them, she should be tested for heartworm & have blood work done also bring a stool sample, it will cost you allot more than the physical will if your girl gets heartworm or parvo. Good luck
