Q: Getting a cat - need advice

September 18, 2008 | By CLopez | 17 answers | Expired: 2180 days ago

I would like to get a cat for our household. I have a 4 yr old daughter (she'll be 5 in Jan) and am looking for any advice on breed, age, temperament of cat that I should get. We would like a cat that's very good with children and likes to cuddle and be held. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thank you very much.

I think your best option is to go to your local shelter. They know the cats and can tell you which are the most gentle and loving. Most people want kittens but I really think an adult cat will be better as you'll already know its personality.

A shelter is definately the place to go. An adult cat is best because they are usually more tolerant. If you explain to the shelter that you are looking for cuddlebug, I'm sure they can help you find one. I think the most important thing you can do it to teach your daughter from the start how to properly handle and interact with all animals, especially cats. Teach her how to read the signs that kitty has had enough petting or play.

Please save a life & go to a shelter. I know this may be a stretch, but are you able to get two? so, s/he has a companion. You should ask to see those on the 'list' to be killed that day & give the lucky angel(s) a forever home.
