What is the best food for a 13 week old cocker spaniel puppy? He is about 7 pounds. And active.

We love Wellness. It avoids all of the major allergens and is full of good vitamins. Our vet approved it and our dogs do good on it. For treats....look up Buddy Biscuits at Cloudstar.com. They are a great treat that uses only the best ingredients. Both of our dogs love them:)

a high quality puppy food is best until he's done growing. puppies require more calories than adult dogs, so puppy formula is important. beyond that, there are several brands (some are mentioned in other answers) which are excellent. the important thing is to find a list of ingredients that sound like food you would eat! (ie chicken, beef, lamb, potato, etc) Avoid foods filled with things like chicken-meal, by-products, and corn as these are mainly fillers and offer no nutritional value. California Natural, Wellness, EVO, and Natural Balance are all excellent foods, but if you didn't want to spend that much there are other brands which are a "step down" from those but still good quality and more affordable. (Nutro Max is a good one, as is Iams/Eukanuba.)

Because a lot of cockers end up with allergy issues when they get older it would be best to start your puppy on a high quality food right away.
I'm a HUGE fan of the Purina Pro PLan diets. They have no preservatives, fillers or food coloring. And everything is grown here in the U.S.A. :)
