Do not buy a flea shampoo from the pet store for little kittens! If they are really young (as in way under 8 weeks) give them a bath with dawn dish detergent, and let it stay on their fur for 10 minutes. Make sure to put cotton balls in their ears so the fleas don't hide there. Consult with your veterinarian for the best way to treat the mother depending on the stage at which she is nursing the kittens. You will have to launder all the bedding the cats have come into contact with at first, and an area treatment of your house may be necessary.

I have heard that using Dawn liquid dishsoap works but I would reccommend flea products monthly.

Ask you vet about a product called Capstar. It may now be under a new name and I know that the local tack and feed store is now able to sell it over the counter(it used to be only available at the vet). It is a pill that you give the kitten and it works in 24 hours and all the fleas are gone.
